Lafayette had already been working for a long time to get a skatepark. The locals with a long history and deep knowledge of skateboarding knew they needed to get Platform Group involved to have it done right. Platform provided specialty skatepark design, community input, and construction documents working with a local architect.
One of our first design/build projects was with Orangeburg. Working with local qualified build partners and in coordination with the city of Orangeburg, we are contracted to develop the full park master plan for this South Carolina community known as “The Garden City.” We’re working to design a park that includes nods to the city’s theme and history, starting from a raw and empty canvas that currently is just a golf course and boat ramp. Working with sensitive FEMA flood plains and navigating that delicate environment fit well within our custom approach for this design. The site is a beautiful raw canvas, and we’re looking forward to turning it into a great park that includes programming relevant to youth, not just typical traditional things found in most parks.
Our friends at Front Rock Concrete run by former pro skateboarder, Kyle Berard, got one of their first municipal park jobs and approached us to become one of our build partners. They needed our assistance to design a small skate spot within a challenging space in downtown Santa Ana. Creating a small but functional skatepark is already a challenge, but this one was also in the shadows of one of the city’s many collections of graffiti murals that they are very proud of. Our design respects this requirement while fitting into the other parameters of this unique space.
Design and consulting for this wild and unique BMX festival included considering the fact that they burn the entire course down after the event. You can't burn down a concrete bowl and you don't want to put the effort in for bowled corners with wood that will be gone in a day, so we designed a hybrid that could still go up in smoke.
An old friend of ours, Chris Blake, was camping in Marathon when he met the locals that expressed interest in a skatepark. Chris connected them with Platform and now we are fortunate enough to be working on the Southermost Concrete Park in the continental US, located in the middle of the Florida Keys. We’re designing this unique 450 foot long street course that boasts a mini-ramp, a bowl, and a pump track.
We’re also experienced in wood and private facility development and design. This custom skatepark was designed and built for a backyard warehouse in Vero Beach, Florida.
Bennington is Vermont's first city and is investing in their youth! This skatepark effort is made up of seasoned skateboard legends that asked Platform Group to help them develop a unique vision for their skatepark. Special features include an indoor bowl and skate shop/museum that celebrates the skateboard history of Bennington. This is the first round of design and will now be ready for input, so stay tuned as the design develops.
Farmington is where Maine’s first skatepark was bult in the early 90’s by a progressive parks and rec director. It’s been shut down for years. The current director is active in listening to his community and intends to revive this project. With limited budget and space, they asked Platform Group for a solution that will both honor the legacy of Maine’s first skatepark while also carrying it into the future.
Located in the North Fork at the eastern end of Long Island is the beautiful small fishing village of Greenport. They’ve had a wooden outdoor park with steel ramps since 1996 in desperate need of renovation. Platform Group donated some concept design services to help them to continue to evolve in the east Long Island action sports scene.
